Once upon a time there were two parties. Though they saw the world differently, they were able to be friends. They might have disagreed on how to approach the culture’s social ills, but they could share lunch, bowl in the same league, and coach the little league team together. They were able to find common ground because friendship and family always trumped politics.
Over time these friends drifted apart. The gap between the friends grew so much that they could no longer identify each other. The distancing of these two friends would force their mutual acquaintances to choose sides.
The left and their allies have blamed the right for this distancing. However, as Pew Research shows, there has been a far greater abandonment of the center by the left than by the right. In fact this abandonment of the center has caused many millennials to #walkaway.
